GETTING AROUND IN LYON

Getting around via public transport with TCL

The TCL network manages all public transport (except Vélo’V) in Lyon and its 63 neighboring municipalities (Villeurbanne, Bron, Ecully, Meyzieu, Oullins, etc.). TCL is the second largest public transport network in France.

The network comprises 4 metro lines, 5 tramway lines, over 100 bus lines and two funicular lines.

Getting around by bike with Vélo’V

Lyon offers a simple, practical bike rental service for all your daily trips about town. The system is wonderfully simple: just rent a bike at any Vélo’v station and then drop it off at the Vélo’v station nearest your destination. With over 540 km of bike lanes, 348 Vélo’v stations and 4,000 Vélo’v bikes available 24/7, pedalling around Lyon is easy.

Note: To be able to use this service, a €150 security deposit will be request in the form of “pre-authorization” to withdraw from a bank card. This amount will be withdrawn in the event of late return or theft of the bike.

Getting around via public transport with STAS

STAS manages the public transport network for Saint-Étienne and its 45 surrounding municipalities. The network comprises 3 tramway lines and some 50 bus lines.

Getting around by bike with VéliVert

VéliVert is a self-service bike rental network available 24/7. The VéliVert network covers the municipalities of Saint-Étienne and Firminy.

TRAVELLING AROUND FRANCE AND ABROAD

Trains

Trains are particularly popular for traveling to other French towns and cities, and surrounding countries (Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg and Switzerland). SNCF manages the railway network throughout France. A TER (regional express train) shuttle runs several times a day between Lyon and Saint Etienne.

If you travel a lot by train, consider season tickets and discount cards. They may reduce the cost of your travel.

Airports

Lyon and Saint-Étienne each have their own airport, providing them with excellent international connections.

Carpooling

Carpooling is very popular in France: drivers planning to carry out a trip offer seats in their car to other travelers doing the same trip or a portion of the trip. It’s an affordable way to travel and you meet new people. You can travel around France and abroad with carpooling.

There are numerous websites dedicated to carpooling. The most popular carpooling site is BlaBlaCar which has a community of three million users.
