Home and civil liability insurance

Home insurance

Before signing your lease, the landlord or real estate agency will ask you to provide proof of home insurance certifying coverage against tenant-related risks (such as water damage or fire).

These policies cover the home as well as its regular occupants. This means that if you move, you must notify your insurance company to insure your new home or cancel the policy.

This insurance is mandatory for tenants renting a property as their primary residence.

Home insurance policies very often include "personal liability" coverage. However, you should verify the specific terms with your insurer, as coverage can vary from one policy to another.

Public liability insurance

In France, anyone who causes harm to another person may be held liable to provide compensation in accordance with civil liability rules. Civil liability insurance covers the costs associated with compensating for harm caused to others.

Civil liability insurance is mandatory. Most insurance companies offer civil liability coverage, either as a standalone policy or as part of a home or comprehensive insurance policy. Civil liability insurance may or may not be included in your home insurance policy; do not hesitate to check with your insurance company about this.
